Lost in Translation (2003)
I’m a positive fan who doesn’t whine about stuff that hasn’t even aired yet. I’m a positive fan, I’m a positive fan, I’m a positwhy the fuck is Sansa Stark talking about her feelings and fucking crying in front of bloody Tyrion Lannister???
There’s nothing wrong with Tyrion himself (well, there’s plenty wrong, but who’s perfect) and I’m not against him as a person here. My complaint is about Sansa’s characterization. (Mildly spoilery explanation ahead.)
In the books Sansa conceals all her negative emotions from Tyrion very carefully much in the same way she does with Joffrey. Her cool courtesy is more than once described as an armour or a castle in which she hides herself despite being physically present, it’s her chosen way of fighting against her situation. Despite his kindness to her, Tyrion is a husband Sansa was forced to marry; she is not attracted to him nor can she trust him. Tyrion might be a nice person, but he’s a Lannister also, and Lannisters are not her friends.
Moreover, Sansa opening up to Tyrion has a possibility of messing up some of the emotionally devastating aspects of their marriage. Tyrion refused to have sex with her on their wedding night (refused to rape her, in truth), but he still wants Sansa, all of her; he wants Sansa to open up to him and learn to love him despite him being a dwarf, despite him being a Lannister. Sansa, however doesn’t want him in any way, she does her duties as is all good and proper, and never willingly gives any bit of herself to him. Physically, Tyrion could take her by force, but that would not help with the emotional rejection and lack of love he’s had to deal with all his life, nor would it erase her disgust towards his body, which he is incredibly self-conscious about. In short, theirs is a desperately unhappy marriage that makes them both miserable.
So Sansa talking about her family’s murder is giving to Tyrion a bit of what he wants: a sign that Sansa trusts him enough to do so. It will probably be emotionally easier to watch than the book version of two people, who are both desperate to be loved for themselves, being quietly unhappy with each other, but I’d welcome this sort of pain that doesn’t involve bloodshed and can’t be fixed with revenge, or with anything, really. Just Sansa and Tyrion, neither of whom can be unquestionably blamed for the situation, both of whom are generally decent people, and their silent, suffocating discomfort. I see Sansa treating Tyrion with any measure of warmth as the show taking an easy way out of a potentially conflicting situation of having her treat one of the “good guys” in exactly the same manner as one of the “bad guys”. They did show Sansa with her “armour” on with Joffrey, after all.
There’s a high chance that the scene is the show baiting the viewers with the possibility of happy ending, but frankly, I’d wish the baiting wasn’t done in the expense of Sansa’s passive resistance.
